Housing the Federal Parliament and government, the city is de facto a capital.
The town is also a university, administrative, transportation and industrial center.
Among its major productions are those of instruments, textiles, machinery, chemicals and pharmaceuticals and chocolate like Toblerone (invented by Theodor Tobler in 1908) and Ovomaltine (known as Ovaltine in Britain, it was created in 1904 by Dr Albert Wander).
The Old Town of Bern is a UNESCO heritage site visited by more than 400 000 tourists.
