Newcastle upon Tyne

England_Newcastle Upon Tyne_1Newcastle upon Tyne is a successor of the old Roman settlement called Pons Aelius that dveloped through the centuries.

In the past the city was as a centre for the wool trade and then it turned into a major coal mining area.

It was among the world’s largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres as well. These first and basic industries of the past have now gone and nowadays the city is mainly an administrative and cultural centre.

Among the iconic symbols of Newcastle upon Tyne are its Newcastle Brown Ale (a brand of beer), Newcastle United F.C. (an English professional association football club), a Premier League football team (an English professional league for men’s association football clubs), and the Tyne Bridge (a bridge always defined as a symbol of Tyneside).
