Nowadays Edinburgh has the strongest economy of any city in the UK outside of London and is a major economic centre.

Its economy is now based mainly on financial services, scientific research, higher education, and tourism.

The city of Edinburgh was declared the first world’s UNESCO City of Literature in 2004 in  recognition of its literature history as well as the significant role the city plays in promoting literature in modern times.
