Scotland_Glasgow_1Glasgow began as a small rural settlement on the River Clyde to become the largest city in Scotland and one of the largest seaports in the world.

Key aspects of the city’s economy are chemicals, textiles and engineering. The town’s strength is in the shipbuilding and marine engineering industry and the production of innovative vessels.

Glasgow is also one of Europe’s leading financial centres. The University of Glasgow, established in the 15th century,was a major factor that helped the city turn into a major centre of the Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th as well as an important eductaional centre nowadays.

Glasgow is a part of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network. The town was  named UNESCO City of Music in August 2008 in recognition of its musical history as well as the significant role the city plays in promoting music in modern times.
