Japan_Kyoto_1_SVARCKyoto is a Japanese city situated in the central part of the island of Honshu. Its population is estimated at about 1.5 million.

According to some sources, the city gained its name Kyoto (or “capital city”) when it was the imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years.

Nowadays Kyoto is a very important economic centre in Japan whose key industries are  information technology and electronics (e.g. the headquarters of Nintendo are there), tourism (it forms a large base of Kyoto’s economy), traditional Japanese crafts (e.g. it is a major  center of kimono manufacturing) and sake brewing (it is a traditional industry of the city).
