Ometepe Island

Nicaragua_Ometepe Island_1_SVARCOmetepe Island offers spectacular views, unspoiled forests, inhabited with by monkeys, opossums and deers.

You can reach the island by boat from the port town of San Jorge, an hour south of Granada.

The word Ometepe developed from the original Aztec’s name for the island, Ome Tepelth, which means two hills.

Remnants of this ancient civilisation can be seen in petroglyphs around the island.

Things to do include a climb to the Maderas volcano, horse-riding and hiking to explore the area.

There are beautiful soft-sand beaches too.
