The state’s economy has long benefited from its silver mines. Those from the colonial era surrounding Guanajuato, were very rich and made the city very wealthy.
Nowadays its silver mines still work and are among the richest in the world. Other minerals harvested from Guanajuato’s mountains are tin, gold, copper, lead, mercury and opals.
The lands surrounding the city are very fertile. Guanajuato produces lots of locally-grown wheat, farm products (such as lettuce, potatoes,fruits and vegetables ) to accompany the meat and poultry.
The state’ exports motor vehicles and auto parts, leather goods, chemicals and electric machinery, etc.
