Valparaíso is a city and port in Chile. The city’s greatest glory and golden age were in the second half of the 19th century when it mushroomed enourmously because of its important geopolitical location.
It was always a great magnet for European immigrants and at that very time the city was well known by foreign sailors as “Little San Francisco” or “The Jewel of the Pacific”.
Today its proximity to the capital and its coastal and important location have turned the city into one of the country’s most important seaports.
Even though Santiago is Chile’s official capital, the National Congress of Chile has been hosted in Valparaíso since 1990.
